In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations and individuals have stepped up to provide much-needed supplies and support for frontline workers. One such organization is iMakr, a Brooklyn-based 3D-printing company that has produced over 5,000 face shields for healthcare workers in New York City.

iMakr was founded in 2012 as a provider of 3D printing services and equipment. The company has since expanded to offer a range of products, including 3D scanners, software, and accessories. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York City in early 2020, iMakr’s founder and CEO, Sylvain Preumont, knew that he wanted to help.

Preumont recognized that there was a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, particularly face shields, which are crucial for protecting workers from airborne particles. He decided to leverage iMakr’s expertise in 3D printing to produce face shields for those on the front lines of the pandemic.

iMakr’s team got to work, using their 3D printers to produce the frames for the face shields. They then sourced materials for the shield part of the device and assembled the final products. The face shields were designed to be reusable, with the frames able to withstand repeated use and the shield part easily replaceable.

The team’s efforts quickly gained attention and support from the local community. iMakr received donations of materials and funds to help cover the costs of production. They also collaborated with other local organizations, such as Brooklyn-based sewing collective Sewing for Lives, to distribute the face shields to hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the city.

To date, iMakr has produced over 5,000 face shields for healthcare workers in New York City. Their efforts have helped to bridge the gap in PPE supply and provide much-needed protection for those on the front lines of the pandemic.

iMakr’s work is a testament to the power of community and collaboration in times of crisis. By leveraging their expertise in 3D printing and partnering with other organizations, they were able to make a meaningful contribution to the fight against COVID-19. Their dedication and generosity serve as an inspiration to us all.
